Meet George Ryan, a member of this year’s MMRF Road to Victories (R2V): Columbia River Gorge ride. After completing his first endurance triathlon in Naples, Fla. in 2017, he met a couple who suggested he do the 70.3 IRONMAN in Lake Placid later that year, as a member of the MMRF team. Without knowing anything about the foundation or disease, he joined the team and started training. During this time, he coincidentally was diagnosed with MGUS, which is a possible precursor to multiple myeloma. “It’s now been 6 years since the first doctor visit, and my condition is stable. I know much more about the disease. I started doing the events for fun, but now it’s more personal, and I see the benefits of the work being done by the MMRF toward making living with the disease less difficult and hopefully finding a cure.”
The team consists of patients, caregivers, doctors, and Janssen employees. Since the program’s inception in 2017, it has been sponsored by Janssen Oncology, raising over $2 million with 100% of the funds going directly to the MMRF’s efforts to accelerate a cure. Meet 2023 Road to Victories (R2V) Columbia River Gorge Team member Julie Ryan, who rides in memory of her mom, Linda. “I am leaning a bit out of my comfort zone as I am more of a hiker than a biker, but doing something to benefit those living with myeloma and being a part of the road to the cure is exactly where my passion lies. I have a long history with the MMRF, having been involved with this organization shortly after my mom was diagnosed in 2002. Scared and searching for answers, my twin sister and I stumbled upon the MMRF and never looked back. We have together done countless walk/runs, half marathons, and several Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma treks. Raising money and awareness for critical research for the cure to myeloma, while getting to meet and build lifelong friendships with those directly affected in some way by myeloma has positively impacted my life in so many profound ways. Now, these are electric bikes, right?”

Since he was diagnosed in 2019, Phillip says he has been an inspiration to watch. “Tom has shown grit and strength during his journey. “Having lost my father to Multiple Myeloma 2 years ago to date, I am so hopeful that we’re close to a cure to this horrible disease.
The #RoadtoVictories ride is a life changing experience for anyone with a connection to MM. Some of these riders were diagnosed just 10 months ago and rode over 200 miles. 10 years ago, they would have been dead within 2 years. The progress that’s happening is real. We’re close. But we need everyone’s help to get us to the finish line.
The themmrf is paving the way and connecting all parties it will take to find a cure. I am so grateful they trusted me and my crew to film this extraordinary event.
The work I have done and will do moving forward will always be for my Dad. I love you, Dad. Thanks for always being with me.”

Mike Cullen Johnson was diagnosed with myeloma in the fall of 2022 and is set to participate in the MMRF Road to Victories (R2V) program for the first time, taking on the California Wine Country ride later this month. Dedicated to fitness and health, Mike became a personal trainer in 2012 and achieved Master Trainer status by 2017. His fitness journey includes running marathons, participating in Spartan Race events, and cycling 30 to 60 miles each weekend.
Mike shared, “After being diagnosed and experiencing all the emotional ups and downs, I soon realized that the best medicine for me would be setting a goal so outrageous and out of the box that it completely consumed all my idle thoughts. While searching for ideas, I was routinely drawn to the videos and stories of people who set out to cycle cross-country. After overcoming all the initial reasons not to do it, I decided to simply say ‘YES.’ Almost a year later, I’m preparing for my first Road to Victories event. After months of chemotherapy treatments, a stem cell transplant, and months of recovery and healing, I’m happy and blessed to confirm that I’ve finally reached remission… and I’m ready to RIDE AGAIN!” Support Mike’s ride to accelerate a cure for myeloma by donating to his fundraising page today https://give.themmrf.org/fundraiser/5574655 and drop a in the comments to wish him luck!

Paul shares, “I have been a myeloma patient since 2014, and this event is a meaningful way for me to mark 10 years of living with the disease. As a regular road bike rider, I participated in the R2V Maine team in 2022, raising over $10,000 for the MMRF. My life was changed in many ways by my diagnosis, but I maintained my enthusiasm and strength for cycling after getting through the first few months of treatment. The ride starting tomorrow through August 25th will be her second R2V ride in memory of her dad. “My dad passed away from multiple myeloma 3 years ago, and I wanted to honor him in some way, so I found the Road to Victories a couple of years ago and thought it was a great way to remember him and raise money for research. Although there isn't a cure, there is still hope with all the treatments that are already available as well as in the works.”

Meet Andrew Gordon who was diagnosed with myeloma in June of 2013 and is a member of this year’s MMRF Road to Victories (R2V): Columbia River Gorge ride. This will be Andrew’s third R2V ride! When asked why participating in the R2V program is important to him he said, “Of course, raising money for research is important. But more important is how it helps to raise awareness. Myeloma symptoms are frequently confused with other medical issues, which results in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Promoting greater awareness helps future patients by creating an environment where diagnosis is made earlier.”

Meet Maddie Graham, a member of this year’s MMRF Road to Victories (R2V): Columbia River Gorge ride.
The team consists of patients, caregivers, doctors, and Janssen employees. Since the program’s inception in 2017, it has been sponsored by Janssen Oncology, raising over $2 million with 100% of the funds going directly to the MMRF’s efforts to accelerate a cure. This ride, August 19th – 25th, will wind cyclists past the wild White Salmon River, through Willamette Valley, and overlooking iconic Mount Adams and Mount Hood. “I am grateful that Janssen Oncology sponsors this event such that 100% of the donations received go directly to research. I am honored and humbled to ride for my colleagues at Janssen, family, friends, and supporters who have multiple myeloma and other cancers that we support through donations and fundraising so that we can achieve the goal of a cure!” Martina’s husband Phillip will join her, riding to honor his colleague and myeloma patient, Tom Fadden. Since he was diagnosed in 2019, Phillip says he has been an inspiration to watch. “Tom has shown grit and strength during his journey. After 37 years of cycling, being involved in an event where you get to help others and raise research dollars to help people live longer and better lives while doing something you love is a win/win in my book.”
